La canzone parla di una cantante d'opera che era vicina al suo debutto ma nella strada viene attaccata e stuprata. Cosi, lei ha perso la sua "chance" e non ha mai archiviato il suo sogno. Ora, da signora anziana, ricorda l'incidente di quella notte e immagina come sarebbe stato se lei fosse andata lì e avesse cantato.
THE HUMAN STAIN
What we can derive from the Human Stain is a message about the environment and how we, as humans, leave a distinct "stain" whether it be in the form of malice or physical pollution. The reference that one wishes to become a child an artistic explanation that perhaps as children things were simpler and the naive vantage of a child projects all thing as pristine and beautiful - as the song shows the world clearly is not. "Don't you wish you were a child again?" In addition, the aforementioned line also lightly references a strong desire to escape the cruel wiles of our world. It also begs us to remember that we who created it may also change it: a blend of pessimism with obscure shades of optimism.

BLUCHER
Blucher is about a ship which was sinked during WWII. We basically see the horrific images of the sinking through the eyes of one of its sailors, who remembers his girlfriend and hopes that she will remember him even after his death.
LOVE YOU TO DEATH
Parla di una leggenda Giapponese su una giovane coppia, forse di quattordicenni o quindicenni. La ragazza ha una malattia letale e muore, e torna indietro dal suo amico per essere una luce di guida per lui.

UP TROUGH THE ASHES
It's the unfair trial of Jesus Christ of Nazareth through the eyes of Pontius Pilot. Being religious or not, common sense has that Jesus was of course innocent of all the accusations and Pontius Pilot knew it, however he could not deny the crowd's wish. So he sentenced him to death, asking first for forgiveness, as he knew he was an innocent man on the cross.
MOURNING STAR
Basically it is about a soldier, who while fighting finds again his faith to God and prays for the nightmare of war to end. The last lines find him asking the reason of all the suffering, a question all the people is moments of sadness and despair ask. Another good image here of the horrors of war.
Or the war could also work as a metaphor and by adjusting that concept in everyday life we can see the need of believing somewhere.
Another theory is that the narrator in this one, questions religion.
One last, although extreme theory is that the song deals with the concept of Messianism, a phenomena that some people tend to wait for a messiah to save them (religious, political or in other fields), with them staying passive and doing nothing to change things. Basically waiting for a figure to take all the burden on his/her back.
SILENCE OF THE DARKNESS
Thomas Youngblood described this once as a tribute to how maddening a journey it can be as an artist. In fact, it's a funny story because Roy, who wrote the lyrics, locked himself up in a room, agonizing over the lyrics to the song. In the lyrics there is desperation and in the music, there is aggression.
